Stay safe and buckle up – MELTING LIKE METAL – goes LIGHTSPEED!

Landing today is a really cool Sci-fi story that I had so much fun narrating.  Melting Like Metal  is written by the talented Ada Hoffman, and sweeps us into the world where her novel, The Outside, takes place.

In Melting Like Metal, however, we are now in the POV of cyborg, Enga.  As an angel of the God called Nemesis, Enga is no longer human. That’s not to say, she still doesn’t have her own share of struggles. She most definitely does.  One of which, is she is not able to speak. For me as an narrator, this was an exciting challenge to play around with. Enga’s only way of communicating now, is by sending text messages from her heavily modified, technological brain.

This story takes off at warp speed and was truly awesome to work on.  If you’d like to check out the podcast, just head on over to Lightspeed Magazine. This podcast was produced by the amazing team at Skyboat Media, and was edited by John Joseph Adams and hosted by Jim Freud.

So…are you ready? Let’s go LIGHTSPEED 🚀

Laughing At The Days To Come – Releases on Audio!

51My6WLyEQL._SL500_Laughing At The Days To Come: Facing Present Trials and Future Uncertainties with Gospel Hope released this week on Audio! Written by Tessa Thompson and published by christianaudio, this audiobook was a joy and honor to narrate. Thompson’s timely message shows us how to keep calm as we look to find encouragement, hope and ultimately laughter – in the days to come.

While Laughing At The Days To Come is not about the COVID-19 virus, the lessons that we glean from Thompson’s journey, offer comparisons to the uncertain times we are all currently facing as we strive to adjust our lifestyles and livelihoods in order to keep ourselves, our loved ones and our communities, healthy and safe.

In Laughing At The Days To Come, author Tessa Thomspon shares with us how at the age of 15 years old she was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2).  This rare, neurological disease is an unrelenting and hereditary disease that gradually took away all of Thompson’s hearing, while also causing chronic pain and partial facial paralysis. Faced with a future of uncertainty, a kind family friend, who knew the trials Thompson would be walking through, handed her a note with a simple verse written on it. Hoping to bring comfort and encouragement, the verse was from Proverbs Chapter 31 verse 25: “Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come.” When Thompson first read this verse, she was not laughing at the time to come, she was doing anything but. She shares how she was full of fear, anger, remorse and much uncertainty. This verse, however, fascinated her enough that she began to study just how exactly the Proverbs 31 Woman was able to look at her future and amidst all her trials and difficulty, was able to laugh, with confident assurance, at the days to come.

As we face our own individual, societal and global challenges during this uncertain time, let us too – strive to find calmness, peace, goodness, encouragement and hope as we help one another, are good to our neighbors, and care for all – so that together we will be able to look toward our future with confidence and assurance – and laugh at the days come.

“Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up” Proverbs 12:25

YEARS by LaVyrle Spencer is Now on Audio! #historicalromance

I couldn’t be more excited to celebrate the audiobook release of YEARS  by LaVyrle Spencer, published by Tantor Audio. I absolutely love Spencer’s writing and her deep, rich characters moved me from laughter to tears on more than one occasion.

Set in 1918, amidst the beautiful and sometimes harrowing landscape of North Dakota, Spencer offers us an evocative glimpse into this time period and the people that called Alamo, North Dakota their home.

YEARS centers on a young feisty schoolteacher who won’t give up on her dream to educate, no matter the hardships she comes against, and the man she unwittingly falls in love with. A man who has long given up on love and instead pours his heart into the land he works, day in and day out. A push and pull begins to happen between these two spirited characters, as they fight against a love that will not be quieted …

9 little liars thought they’d escape…find out if they did… IN THE DARK – now on Audio!

A remote bay in the interior of British Columbia, Canada. A secluded mountain lodge.  Nine people brought together again…each with a deadly secret… each with something to hide. Only one will make it out …or will they?

IN THE DARK written by the incredibly talented Loreth Anne White, released this week on Audio! Published by the wonderful team at Brilliance Publishing, I had so much fun narrating this riveting, closed circle/locked room mystery!

Based on Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None, we begin with 9 people who all share a common secret from the past, a moment that has haunted each of them in their own way for the past fourteen years. White, immediately ups the ante as one guest meets their fate early on, while the remaining eight are transported by a de Havilland Beaver MK1 aircraft to an isolated part of Kluhane Bay in northern BC. The guests are to stay at … what they believe is an all-expenses-paid luxury getaway at the Forest Shadow Wilderness Resort & Spa.

Once the guests arrive at the lodge, the mood suddenly shifts and White’s vivid words transport us into a world where nothing is as it seems. We are immediately immersed into a dark, moody, haunting atmosphere where upon entering the lodge, a riddle is uncovered… with eight figurines.  The guests begin to sense that something… isn’t quite right …

What was especially exciting about narrating In The Dark, aside from the fact that I am originally from British Columbia, is that the author shifts time periods throughout the book, traversing between events taking place among the guests at the lodge over a ten day period and the present day search and rescue team trying desperately to find them. White also employs a switching of perspectives, so we are able to see into the slow unraveling of each of the guests’ minds, as the mask of each character is pealed back to reveal the dark and ugly secrets hidden underneath. As each guest begins to spiral out of control, we see how their hand also played a part in this sinister game of revenge.

“For in the end there can only be one. But maybe . . . there shall be none”

Nine little liars thought they’d escape…find out if they did…

ECOPIETY – Releases today on Audio!

Releasing today on Audio! Ecopiety: Green Media and the Dilemma of Environmental Virtue written by Sarah McFarland Taylor and published by the wonderful team at Tantor Audio!

“It’s 3:23 in the morning and I’m awake…” Ecopiety begins with a prophetic excerpt from spoken-word poet and filmmaker Drew Dellinger’s poem Hieroglyphic Stairway.  In the poem, he describes waking up in the middle of the night haunted by his great grandchildren’s questions…. They want to know of him, “Surely you did something as the seasons started failing? As the mammals, reptiles, and birds were all dying?” The children press deeper demanding, “Did you fill the streets with protest when democracy was stolen?” “Their final question hangs heavy in the air as a haunting refrain of accusation: “What did you do once you knew?”

What will we do? What can we do? Ecopiety opens our eyes to this question, propelling us to action by holding a mirror up to this very real problem that we all share – the fate of Earth and our role in its future.

By examining the intersections of environmental sensibilities, contemporary expressions of piety, while skillfully incorporating examples from American popular culture through the likes of the eco-pious Christian Grey of Fifty Shades of Grey and the socially conscious vegetarian vampires in True Blood, Taylor shows us how to move from mere environmental ideals into significant response.

Two Nights, Two Shows – Only One New York!

A highlight from last month in beautiful New York was having the opportunity to see two fantastic productions playing on Broadway!

First – Shakespeare’s King Lear directed by Sam Gold – What an honor to see the legendary, Glenda Jackson, in the title role! I have followed Jackson’s brilliant career for as long as I can remember, so this was such a special treat to see her incredible performance as Lear opposite the extraordinary, Ruth Wilson. If you’re familiar with Shakespeare’s King Lear, you will no doubt remember the significant storm scene in Act Three, Scene One. Funny enough, on the way to the Cort Theatre this particular night, I was literally caught in a heavy downpour with flash flood warnings! My Lyft driver was trying not to panic as he was getting numerous alerts as to the impending flash floods. He confidently yelled back to me while en route – “Don’t worry – I know we’re in a storm but I’ll get you to the theatre on time!” I couldn’t help but smile as I thought to myself – well this really is the perfect weather in which to see King Lear. This show has now closed, however the wonderful memory of this evening and production, will definitely live on.

The second production I saw whilst in New York was HADESTOWN. I can’t even begin to express how much this show captivated my heart. From the stellar cast, to the incredible set, to the music to the staging – HADESTOWN truly took my breath away. Directed by Rachel Chavkin with Music, Lyrics and Book by Anaïs Mitchell, I remember being not even half way through the First Act, thinking – “Oh my gosh! I wish I had another night to see this show again.”  Winner of 8 Tony awards (including Best Musical!) with 14 nominations – Hadestown tells a version of the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, where Orpheus goes to the underworld to rescue his fiancée Eurydice. Hades is played brilliantly by Patrick Page! Do go see Hadestown at the William Kerr Theatre if you’re in New York or are planning to visit. You’ll be so glad you did!

Until next time, New York…
