Two Identical Doors. Behind One, a Lady. Behind the Other, a Tiger…

fth-finalSuch a joy to be a part of FROM THE HEART, a month of free audio put together by the extraordinary Xe Sands and Jennifer Conner as a way to say thank you to our listening community!

Today, I’m up at bat with an intriguing short story called The Lady, or The Tiger?  written by Frank R. Stockton. This riddle immediately caught my attention and I love how Stockton leaves it up to the listener to decide which door our protagonist opens! If you’re unfamiliar with the story, here is a brief look behind the two doors…

In a land far far away an unusual punishment is imposed by a semi-barbaric king in which the accused must leave his life to impartial and incorruptible chance as he chooses between two identical doors. Behind one door is a beautiful lady, who the accused man would immediately wed after choosing that door, behind the other is a ferocious tiger who is ready for his next meal.  Our protagonist has fallen in love with the princess. Upon learning of this forbidden relationship, the king sentences this young man to the choosing of the  doors. Meanwhile, the princess has discovered the secret behind the door and signals her lover. But which door does she signal? If she indicates the door with the lady, she must watch the man she loves marry a woman she despises. If she leads the man to the tiger, she must watch him be torn to pieces. What do you think? Which did he choose The Lady or the Tiger?

The Lady or the Tiger was first published in The Century magazine in 1882. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, author Frank Stockton is best known for this short story.

You, Fascinating You – First Glimpse Inside the Upcoming Audiobook!

I couldn’t be more thrilled to be narrating this exquisite novel written by Germaine Shames, produced by Punch Audio.  You, Fascinating You is based on the true story of Hungarian ballerina, Margit Wolf, who leaves Hungary at the age of 17 with dreams of dancing at La Scala.  Once in Italy, she meets Italian composer, Pasquale Frustaci, the man who would become the love of her life.  As World War II becomes imminent and in the wake of Mussolini’s edict banishing foreign Jews from Italy, Margit returns to Hungary with their young son. She would not be reunited with her Italian maestro for another 22 years.

In this brief clip, older Margit takes us back to the day when at 17, she breaks the news to her parents that she has received an opportunity to dance … at La Scala. Have a listen!

Thrilled to be a part of this very cool multi-voiced audiobook, Ninth City Burning, written by the incredibly talented J. Patrick Black and published by Penguin Random House.

I had so much fun portraying the quirky, always outspoken inventor Kizabel and her alter ego or “instara” (a.k.a. spectral assistant) Lady!

Set 500 years in the future after an alien attack on planet Earth, suddenly Earth is at risk once more. A select group of 7 individuals come together from unique locations around the globe, each needed for their rare talent, if they have any hope of saving the planet. Written from various perspectives, all in first person, Black has created wonderfully rich characters that are a joy to portray.

Ninth City Burning is now available on Audible and at Amazon.com.

The Next 25 Years begins with Star Trek: The Next Generation and beams through to present day.  I had so much fun portraying a myriad of incredibly talented women in this audible history of Star Trek! An added highlight, was the opportunity to portray two of my favorite women in space – Gates McFadden (Dr. Beverly Crusher) from Star Trek: The Next Generation and Kate Mulgrew (Captain Janeway) from Star Trek: Voyager. Such an honor to be a part of this exciting (audible) history, as we commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Star Trek.

Published by Macmillan Audio and produced by the great team at Punch Audio, The Fifty-Year Mission: The Next 25 Years is now available on Audible.com and Amazon.

Beyond The Orphan Train Series – just released on audio!

9781633897854Step back in time to May 1907 and meet the Cooper children – Ethan, Alice, Simon and Will as they begin a remarkable journey to find a new home and life in Arleta Richardson’s Beyond The Orphan Train Series. I so enjoyed narrating these heartwarming books for christianaudio and immediately fell in love with Richardson’s poignant writing and her wonderfully rich characters.

Based on the real life story of Ethan Cooper, this series takes place during the early 1900’s where eight year old Ethan and his younger sister and brothers find themselves suddenly on their own.  They journey to an orphanage in Pennsylvania called Briarlane Christian Children’s Home, and soon after, continue on with 21 other children in search of a new life aboard the Orphan Train.

Orphan Trains were in operation between the years 1824 and 1929 and carried approximately 250,000 children who were either orphaned, homeless or abandoned.  The trains would make stops in small mid-western farming communities along the way, in the hopes that a loving family would take one or more of these children in.

Looking For Home, Whistle-Stop West, Prairie Homestead and Across The Border are now available on Audible, Amazon and at christianaudio.

THE REGIONAL OFFICE IS UNDER ATTACK! – on Book Riot’s list as one of the Best 10 Audiobooks of 2016 So Far

10 of the Best Audiobooks of 2016 So Far

51SoryuPmhL._SL300_The Regional Office Is Under Attack! by Manuel Gonzales:

A smart, bonkers, and awesome book filled with lady assassins, a mechanical arm wielding character, an Oracle, and great fight scenes that had me cheering for fighting–and was literally what the title says it is about. The delivery of the narrators (Sarah Scott, Natasha Soudek, Susan Hanfield, and Mike Chamberlain) was so spot-on that every time there was an f-bomb dropped I’d laugh out loud (the real kind not the online lol kind) 08-08-16

GROUNDED: THE ADVENTURES OF RAPUNZEL Tyme, Book 1

by Megan Morrison | Read by Susan Hanfield

Children Ages 8+ • 12.75 hrs. • Unabridged • © 2015

In this fractured fairy-tale debut, narrator Susan Hanfield adds vocal perfection to Morrison’s rich characters. Rapunzel knows only her tower and Witch, who takes care of her every need. When Jack comes to her tower with stories of injured fairies, cures, fairy magic harmful to Witch, and stories of Witch’s lies, Rapunzel reluctantly agrees to descend into the world she’s been taught to fear. Hanfield handles Rapunzel’s emotional transitions from incredulous disbelief to all-consuming love for Witch and to her ultimate transformation from a spoiled and sheltered girl into a confident and trustworthy companion. Hanfield’s portrayal of Witch switches effortlessly between sweet and motherly and cold and raspy. Hanfield nails each character no matter the role, creating a magnificent performance.
